A lot of games also have IRL cash shops and aggressive microtransactions despite being completely single player. A LOT. That doesn't make it remotely a great idea

You should never have to FOMO players into coming back to your game instead of just having them come back because they want to play it again or experience new updates you're putting out

NEVER put your players on a timer, especially in single player games like this - completely arbitrary and it is never good to in any way, shape, or form, strongarm your players into playing again

Particularly when this strongarming involves something that actively lessens the amount of content available to those who simply didn't even hear about your game until after the arbitrary timer had run out

This sort of thing works for temporary discounts for launch days or special updates, but you should NEVER tie actual content, big or small, useful or cosmetic, to a real life timer in a game like this. Or most games, really

ESPECIALLY a game like Dinkum that prides itself on being relaxing shouldn't be going "Have fun, take your time. :)" while in the same breath going "BTW PLAY BY THIS DATE OR YOU MISS OUT ON THIS THING FOREVER/AN ENTIRE YEAR. YOU WILL NEVER SEE THE ITEMS OR COSMETICS FROM THIS PERIOD EITHER EVER AGAIN OR AT MINIMUM FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR OF YOUR LIFE!"

If you make your game good, players will return to it based on that alone - they don't NEED you pressuring them in an already chaotic and extremely busy world

This needs to rotate on an in-game calendar, not stress people out who love collecting and such in games and may not have the time necessary during that particular period to expand their collection with the neat holiday stuff

Pressuring people into playing was never my intention. I just thought something like this would be a nice gift while people are waiting for the next update.

I didn't want to tie the event to in game calendar, as I have no way of knowing what season players are in.

The event is actually tied to your system's clock. So hopefully it will be incredibly easy to play this event whenever you like in the future.

Maybe another option would be like what Terraria does. If your real-life time is not coinciding with a seasonal event, you can use an item to summon an event. Maybe here, you could have a craftable/purchasable item that, when used, starts the seasonal event for a select number of in-game days.

That's a very good idea!

No fix for gates bug where you can not put them in any direction without fence :(

But content is really cool :) Just to be sure, things I can craft for limited time from Nick will not dissapear after December right?

I would love if he kept visiting our island like Mr. Buckethead(I always forget his name), maybe just change his clothes or something after the holidays are over. Or alternatively only have him visit during the summer month in-game.

Happy Christmas! Super grateful for this! I received the game as a gift on Christmas. I thought I was going to miss out on the event. Thank you for tying the event to the system clock! :8bitheart: BTW I am so hooked on this game. GG

So you make them game with calendar system like in Stardew, but lock the event behind IRL date? Stardew didn't mess that one.
A lot of games do that. A LOT, and event like that is a reason for people to come back.

Player retention tactics that are linked to FOMO work in tandem with in-game storefronts, micro-transactions and nowadays, full on macro-transactions.

There is zero reason, none, nada, zilch, to have any sort of FOMO in games designed around single-player experiences with no in-game storefronts. FOMO is already irritating to deal with in live-service titles but expected, bringing that to games like this? There'd be no reasonable justification for it. Luckily, that doesn't seem to be the case here, which is awesome.

Let us not attempt to justify nor act as if FOMO should be normalised across the board please.
