Multiplayer Nameless blank characters

Bought the game to play with a friend and joined their island almost instantly after finishing the first day. The game for some reason created a nameless character with what is apparently generic clothing. The character also seems to lack an island of their own, as singleplayer for it doesn't load, making acquiring certain recipes impossible.
