Can I play this with family from start to finish? Or will they need to return to their island and work on their own stuff in order to progress with me?

I am looking to just play together from the start.

It's recommended that each player begin on their own Island and play the tutorial so they get all crafting blueprints from Fletch. Crates and nails would be the last two needed. When completed, Sleep to Save before joining a multiplayer world. Then all start with all the basic blueprints needed.

It is important to make a distinction in regards to the mines and airport. Yes, the Host must be the one that activates those trips but it isn't everyone else "can" come but that everyone "must" come. There is no choice. If the Host goes to a mine, everyone must go into the mine too. Same with the airport.

The best way to make sure you know exactly how multiplayer works, you might want to check out the Dinkum Wiki on Multiplayer[dinkum.fandom.com]. It will explain all that multiplayer entails along with any limitations.

As soon as they learn to craft nails (to enable full crafting) on their own island, you can play together for as long as you like. Just remember that the host can place down deeds, but everyone can contribute materials. The host also is the only on that can use the mines/airport but everyone else can come for the ride.

That's great advice, thank you. Is there anything else I should know just starting out?

Read this first year in dinkum guide:

Also, once your friends/family join a central map, they can always go back to their original map to mine finite resources. Certain things don't respawn on their own, so they can boost a central map by bringing wattle/bottle bush seeds and old signs from their map to yours.
