2. Buy 11 shovels, put them all in quick toolbar.
3. Cycle throughout. Dig 11x, place 11x.
I stopped using my 4 wheelbarrows once I maxed my toolbar slots. Dig deep enough (5-6 tiles below sea level) and you'll get unlimited dirt. Best make a pit to get dirt from, cover up afterwards once done with the area.
I'm currently terraforming walls of dirt (and a moat) into a castle. Image below for reference.

if you don't want to use mods.
compactor is indeed the tool to level the field.
if you dig into the ground afaik from the sixth level down the dirt is infinite, so if you need a lot of new dirt somewhere, dig there a hole with steps & use that dirt instead to manouver it from far away.
it's still a lot of work, but maybe that's just the game
if you're trying to move land from one area to another, the multishovel method is the best way, get 10 shovels, fill them all at once from one area, then unload in another. It's better than the wheelbarrow in that less wear and tear and you move faster.
