You dont need a barbecue in the beginning just make a campfire - it does the same job.

The bbq is not relevant. Your priorities should be the sawtable because contrary to bbq and furnace, it can't be replaced. bbq you can just use the fireplace, thou it's much slower and the furnace you can use the clay thing, thou it's also much slower and can't smelt iron if i'm not mistaken.

At the beggining I'd suggest to focus on getting the villagers deeds by getting hearts with them and spend some money on their things. Frank in special is very important.

Everything seems crazy expensive at first but once you hit your stride, it will all balance out. Initially I was selling anything I could get my hands on: Shells, bugs, fruit, etc. Also, definitely take the time to do favors for the villagers. They can often pay a lot more than what an item is worth.

Don't wait for any one visitor; just help them all as they show up and make their businesses as they request them. And once you can afford it, get that metal detector. Finding buried items can really boost your income in the early game.

Pro tip:

Place campfires in a single underwater tile. That prevents you from lighting yourself on fire when cooking. You don't need a BBQ, it's just a luxury

If you need quick cash you could try your luck at finding pearls. They sell for a nice chuck of change and you can probably find 5-6 a day if not more. Or if it's the right season (think spring?) the big scary birds in the tropics lay eggs that you can sell for 10k-20k a piece.

Go fishing for saltwater fish. Then cook it and sell it to John. Pretty quick way to get a lot of money and level up a skill.
