This and the cost per day have pretty much soured me ever going down there again, which means now I will have to save up and buy the quarry so I can at least slowly acquire some iron.

Treasure detection with rank 2 has definitely been the most lucrative option to making dinks. In a few days you can amass a fortune.
To kill any enemy in this game, all you have to do is run in a circle around it, then hit it when it goes to attack. That's the winning strategy for every single monster in the game, with the exception of when the glow alligator spews spores, which you just run away from. I have yet to come even close to dying yet.
My biggest gripe is how dark it is and not having the ability to recharge my luckily obtained miner's hat. It stresses me out to even be down in the mines, and adding the cost of it on top of that - I get the complaints.
