The visiting players in multiplayer can do anything the host can do except choose where buildings are placed, move buildings and sell farm animals.
The starting quests (getting up to building John's Shop) can only be completed in your own world. These quests are required to unlock the recipes for the Crude Furnace, Nails and Wooden Crates, so it might be good to finish those quests in your own world before you play with friends.
I know some players aren't a fan of this so multiplayer progression is something I will be looking at in the future.
