View at the other end of my town.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2850296880
The map had a lot to do with it... I explored before putting down Fletch's Tent. Inspired by the biomes of game and exploration before settling down. No money no tools to shape the land on a large scale... basically forced to build with the land and not against.
I settled at the meeting of 2 rivers on the map. ALOT of current cities in the world have their beginnings at rivers dating all the way back to Mesopotamia... Tigris n Euphrates... I also used to live in Sacramento with the Sacramento and American Rivers...
I figure why break away from human nature.
what i've seen in videos & pictures, other players have the same attitude, usually there is sort of a center with all the buildings, & there might be somewhere the workspace, the farmspace, spaces for the animals & then the mine, so not that much to design with
but ok i will try to show what i've got, which is not finished, let's say, early access layout
here the first map i played
i didn't move far away from the landing pier & the first tower. the spot has 3 pretty lakes. i placed my own house with a view across it & beyond. it's not changed much, quite en nature. the main center with all the other buildings is arranged around the main big lake, which is straightened to form a circle. & there is on the side the third smaller lake, which is also straightened, it's still work in progress, it will get street lamps & benches. the museum is on a sandbank next to the main part. i'm still working on the road out into the wild, which will connect the main lake with the next bridge & where the visitor tent, a small mining site & the first tower are located. that character has no deep mine.
that's the map & the layout of the town

here the view from my house over the lake, then the path toward town which leads through the small garden with 2 chooks. i am in a process to widen it to accomodate maybe up to 4 chooks. Rayne's shop is nearby so she can help watering the plants.

here the main lake. small working area between John's & Fletch's. below the farm with wheat, sugar cane, bottle brush & fruit trees. that's next to the small pond which still has to get some benches & lights.
between the garden & the farm is also a small cooking area. (not pictured)

the museum on the sandbank. & the road out of town.

the whole thing is still growing, though i don't think i will move the shops to a different place, i wish we'll get more shops, more NPCs.

Farmlands and animals needed a lot of space, so they took up the southern stretch of the island, with a bridge connecting to the ranch plateau.

And then stairs leading down to a general gardening and crafting area, with a pathway to the docks.

Finally a pleasant little park area with a beach just below it. Tree walls are surprisingly effect and will actually keep all animals out, while allowing players to freely travel through them.

My choice of word, district, could have been better. Lets say 'area' instead of district and with said you have showed us those very things, a 'farm' area, a 'workshop' area, etc.
And your comment about most other players having the same attitude about layouts, basically grouping all the buildings around a central square, is most likely correct.
That is the very reason I started this thread. To see whats different from the 'norm' out there. Different than building around the central square.
@em_t_hed town is a great example of 'something different'. Less boxy, stretched out along a geographic feature (the river), building with the landscape as opposed to building in spite of it (meaning the area was not beaten into a flat, featureless pancake before building was started).
@Imharris1157 some different building set-backs. A non squarish central plaza with some elevation changes. Some nice landscaping (nice mix of trees and plantings).
@HunterSilver was different as well in not placing the park in the center of the town (a common move), but building it away from the center so it becomes a destination in and of itself. And the use of the hedges in town actually creates different 'districts' even though they might be smallish.
Great examples so far. I hope to see more!
And I also like that you have not clumped all your buildings in tight to one another, but spread some of them out quite a ways. It gives the place some 'depth' so to speak.
Thanks. I grabbed a couple pictures of the inside. Still a little empty, I am hoping a fountain will fit nicely there. I just unlocked sprinklers, so haven't had a chance to check.
Yes I have considered that, I have just been lazy getting most of Franklin's things. Right now if I see one I just stab it with my spear.

This inspired me so much thank you - I was really disliking and not knowing what to do with my down center - I sunk mine down a level put some grass and chairs in, looks so much better thank you, wish it was this pretty thou.

I gave my town a more or less grown touch with many trees, a brick-tower
( which contains the mine ) and a bridge crossing the town.
