Will digging a lake out cause more lake fish to spawn?
I have very few lakes in my world and I'm trying to dig out a lake to get more lake fish to spawn. Will this work? What causes fish to spawn in the world?

Yes. They will appear. It took me a few days after digging mine for them to appear. But it wasn't very many.

i would guess all the spawn points are generated together with the map, so changing it afterwards won't add new spawn points. but it could be suggested in the suggestion thread to get extra spawn points for fish, Ted Selly sells croco, devil & shark lures already.

So I did this and the only thing I ever got to spawn were jellyfish every now and then (they would leave the next morning) but no fish. The only two fish i ever saw were ones that i watched slowly swim into my giant pool but then the next morning they were all gone.

Half the Billabongs i look into are empty of any fish at all, i think the spawn rate is very low.

Have heard of fish spawning after some time (at least a day passing), but it may not always function like a fresh 'RNG pond'.

So, it definitely happens. The only thing I haven't seen yet in the ponds are making a new lilly/lillies!

This. I am annoyed about that damn Saratoga fish. URGH> Where ARE YOU FISHY!!?!!? Every billabong I;ve searched at night for several days has been almost devoid of fish.

Yeah i got to find and short finned eel and the Saratoga too - and i don't like fishing at night so much as i find it too dark to see anything, but i use the book, and the billabongs are always empty.

so the size of the body of water will increase the chance of having fish spawn in it. Digging a small decorative pond won't spawn fish. As people have mentioned the smaller billabongs either never or rarely have fish. If you however extend a naturally small billabong or dig your own culvert that large you can indeed get fish to spawn inside it. It less an rng and more a size thing from my experimenting. I did however trench to a small pond and got a fish in there and then back filled he was there for a couple weeks.

For me it doesn't matter the billabong size .. they are always empty - very few fish in the day, nothing at night.. Crocs thou. I have two larger ones by my village and one just off to the side never anything in them. I know there's nothing in the three of them cause i'm checking them nightly for that Short Finned Eel. What is considered night time in this game thou, its dark at 5 is that night time or still day?

My friend made a swimming pool and jellyfish spawned there,

Has anyone ever found crocks in pools? I expanded my animal pen and it has a decent size pond in it but I'm worried they might get eaten if one spawns. Should I fence it off?

It seems to me that it might depend on the depth of the pool.
I made a pool in my animal pen because they do love water. But it is only 1 tile deep, they can't swim, only walk and splash around in it, which they happily do. There never was any issue with fish or predators spawning.
I also made a little decorative canal like pool in my town center. It is 4 tiles wide, the outer 2 tiles being only 1 tile deep but the 2 middle tiles being 2 tiles deep so you automatically swim if you get that far in. Occasionally a fish spawns or a jellyfish. They never stay long but despawn rather quickly. But one day there did a shark spawn in there. He was kind of stuck cause there wasn't much room to move and it looked kind of funny. But he probably would have been able to eat any animal that got too close, I guess.
