I am afraid to stray too far from home because every time I do I can't find my way home I just let myself get killed or drown so I wake up back home, because I am so confused on how to use the map, when I think I am going in the right direction I check the map and I am so far from home I am completely lost and just can't get it right. I did make it home a few times by pure luck, can anyone explain it to me in a simple way so maybe I can finally get it right? Thank you for any help you can give.

It might be helpful to lock the minimap; by default, it faces the same direction you do, but there is a checkbox in the "gameplay" options that locks it so North is always up.

Another tip: I tend to open the map and click on my house to put a flashing marker on it; this makes "home" show up on the compass at the top of the screen. It'll last until you unmark it or load the game, at which point you can just do it again to get the marker back.

Click on home, or any symbol on the map. It will indicate what direction to walk to. You can also place your own symbols and do the same thing in case you're trying to mark a spot for animals/fruit etc. Just fyi, you definitely don't want to keep dying late game. You lose half your durability on items and some of your money.

Yeah realising that you can make a marker and then click it to have it appear on your minimap is game changing.
