how do i cook food

i have a campfire and find yabbie and so i press q to throw yabbie onto fire but it doesnt cook it even if i leave it there for a couple mins, i cant right mouse or left mouse with the yabbie either next to the fire

a yabbie is considered a 'critter' in the game and so far is not something you can cook or eat. They are something to donate to the museum or sell to John or Ted. Can store them in boxes.

using a fire place to cook or a bbq, you can use the 'insert' prompt.
If unsure what can be used you can hold a yellow machine manual book and the book will tell you what can go into a machine.
