You gotta start your island, do like 5min or work (place stuff, learn simply gathering) then you can be coop for days on end with a friend. You won't get the recipes they learn, but you'll get NPC hearts (reputation), can gather anything in their world (and vice versa).
You're a guest on a friends island but you can basically do most of what they can do.
A guest cannot move an NPC in as only the host's relationship matters for that, place, or move a structure. But other than that, they can do everything else. Which is also why we caution opening your game up to the public as they can really mess your island up given how freedom and powers every player has.
Be aware that everyone has to go to the mines as it's a function of the game engine. So you can't have some players on the regular map and some in the mines.
