Where do you build at the beginning?
Is that important?

I build by a teleporter that is surrounded by a decent amount of land. There's some benefit to starting in the north or south as it's easier to get to barracuda for fishing.

Before you commit to a map, explore it to make sure the teleporters are useful and not on some far flung island.

You build wherever you decide to build.

As for teleporters, what are those? Haven't seen anything like that

Spoiler: Explanation for Teleporters.
There are 4 Tele Towers and Franklyn will give you a blueprint for a 5th once you repair the other 4. They can be found at the 4 furthest points on your map in North, South, East and West positions. You can use them to teleport from one location to another. Here's the wiki page[dinkum.fandom.com] for them to show you what they look like so you can look for them. You need to repair all 4. Worth fixing IMHO because you can zip to all 4 furthest points of your map in seconds. You're going to need items from the metal barrels and items you find while metal detecting for the repairs so hold on to some of that stuff.

ETA spoiler tags.

OP, I tend to build in a central position on my map that puts me near a lot of different biomes I can get to quickly on foot early game. If you're creative and like to build mega-structures, central gives you plenty of room to expand in all directions. The good thing is that you do get the ability to move all buildings, even your own house, and could move your entire town, if you wanted. I really do like that feature and did indeed move my entire town in my first game. I built initially where I landed and had no room to expand except West. I wanted things more central and moved the entire town to a new setup in the center of the map.

Oh, that's good to know thanks. I thought it's permanent and placing these centered makes also sense!

Ok, thanks. Fixed one and couldn't figure out what it did after repair. Guess I have to repair at least one more for it to work

I built in the center, as I had no idea where to start. This happened to put me near most biomes, which is very helpful (I am way too far from pine, so I would not want to do that again!) I would also build north on a reply, since all the best fish for cash are in the northern ocean - I never go to the south.
