Do you farm to eat or to sell?
So I am just getting into farming on a bigger scale; advanced sprinklers, scarecrows, fertilizer - you get the picture.

Up to this point I would have considered myself a 'gentleman farmer' meaning I really only grew small batch crops to supplement my orchards and support my cooking endeavors.

But now I wonder if farming can actually be a money maker when doing a cost/effort/benefit analysis.

So for all you farmers out there, is selling crops actually worth it when compared to other dink streams (like deep mining) and if so how big do you need to go farm wise to make it profitable?

I used my crops to make prime roasts to sell and found out that ted selly had the same purchase rate as jimmy 50 prime roast 1,120,732 dinks (john was 747,155)

I didn't do the bread to fairy bread thing cause i hate standing around the grain mills
and the amount of clicks to end product was just annoying for me.

best to work out what you enjoy regarding game play and go with that.

selling honey and coconuts cloth and pearls can also be good if you want to just go with foraging

with the update i am not sure what would be best for raising dinks as all that can change.

Farming animals is worth the time. Farming crops isn't really unless you're turning those crops into something more useful. I personally got rich off brewing, honey, and animals.

High quality cheese and cloth are worth a lot of money. Corn is not. My animal farm is at 11 chickens, 12 vombats, and 10 pleeps. I eat mostly big fried egg and cooked quandong.

My actual crops are broken into vines, stakes, and everything else. See here:

That's a decent size farm. Larger than most players' farms, but definitely not as large as the players who plant thousands of seeds at once. I farm to support my animals and to make other foods like prime roast, but I will occasionally stockpile so I can sell to Jimmy.

That sale was worth about 108 million dink, but crops were a tiny fraction of what netted me so much money. Most of that was cheese, cloth, brews, and tech. Crops also need a lot of fertilizer, at least initially. One way to can jump start this is to craft a bunch of compost bins, capture a bunch of roos and harvest their poo for fertilizer.

Also, don't sell rubies. You will need them in the next update.

I reached my first Fall and haven't planted a single thing XD. But oh boy, is my mining skill up.

Farming is VERY profitable. It's not about how big you need to be, but how big you want to be.

Onions for example will will net you 385k for every minute spent in the tractor (harvest/replant). A third of that is probably seed cost, but that's still a huge profit for 1 minutes work.

The main work is of course just setting up the farm.

Also, turning the tractor is slow, you'll be less than that 385k per minute if you keep having to turn your tractor. My farm is a loooong instead of square so I turn less.

Farming is very VERY profitable is you have the sprinklers to back it up.
Fairy bread is one of the most profitable items you can sell in a bunk because it's easy to get 50+ and they sell very well. 400 (300 flour + 200 sugar) gets you at least 3M

To eat I never really needed anything besides cooked bananas or cooked apples so... year.

I'm not a fan of selling the green stuff because I use them for crafting and making Franks itens. And I'm a horder. So farming is my base money with cloths and cheese and produces from keg

Edit: Here is my planting place

I do a bit of farming just to eat. I'm not into grinding so mass production is not for me; farming has to be fun. I have 100 fruit trees and harvest those; I used to cook the fruit, but that got boring so now I just sell it raw. Obviously I don't make much money, but still have a million coins with pretty casual play. If super expensive things are introduced then I'll probably just ignore them. I don't have a tractor or helicopter, but eventually I'll get enough cash to buy a helicopter maybe. I think the main thing is to have fun. If fun mean you want a mass farm then go for it. For me, farming is a home garden with a small selection of crops for personal consumption.

Very nice and completely on board.
Fun fact: If you make your home garden near the villagers, they will water some of the crops for you.

The amount of time needed to make that profitable is immense. Fairy bread is arguably the most time intensive item in the game in terms of money making as it involves so many cooking steps. The click count to get one fairy bread compared to say a bottle brew or jelly brew makes it pretty low dink to time invested.

If you're ok with spending most of your time farming wheat, sugar, and then clicking like crazy, that's fine but it becomes such a huge time sink. Imo there are better ways to make money that let you enjoy the rest of the game. But you're of course free to play the game as you wish.

Thank you. As a old Harvest Moon player, farming is my jam. Between my farming and my 100 grainers, I love to use the tractor and zigzag on the grainers later.
Trees are nice, but between clicking 100 times to harvest the trees and 100 times on the grainers, I prefer the grainers

That's cool. It's what makes the game so good, there's something for everyone right?

But I'm at 411 million dink and money is stupid, outside of Jimmy's absurdly overpriced keys. So it's even less pressing to make money in general.

Very true. And that's why I love this game even more. The terraforming bit that AC gives makes the game so much more attractive! I'm still trying to make the perfect town and wonders for it. Maybe they'll give us the custumized tile before Early Game is over
