Storing items

I finally got my sleeping bag and went to sleep. I found some fruit and picked up one but how to get rid of it to pick up more? How do I eat it or put it away lol My character holds onto the one piece and dont know how to do anything with it?

there is a suitcase in Fletch's tent you can store items in until you learn to build crates (it won't take much time for that) you eat by highlighting the bottom field where the fruit is and click the left mouse button.
