If you have the dive helmet, metal detecting river beds is a good way to do that, especially if you're several years in as the game just fills river beds with buried tech.
OMG thanks for this! Not OP but I'm running into the same problem. I had no issues with keys for level 1 mine, but now that I'm hitting the lower mine (need those pesky ores to get the better gear from Franklyn) , I find that area just EATS up keys.
Even though I'm a few years into the game and have a fairly large city, I have not even messed with crab pots or the dive helmet (and I usually don't even bother with the metal detector because it's kinda annoying compared to simply hunting for X's lol).
I'm totally trying your suggestions when I get home!
Just be aware it's riverbeds, doesn't work on ocean tiles, or bays, or ponds, just rivers for some reason. The first time I did it, it was like every other square was tech. The metal detector would not stop going off. It was glorious.
One, I don't have the helmet yet...I thought I had gotten all the "rare" gear from the first level mines but it seems I haven't found that helmet yet, and two...I didn't realize you had to bait the pots every single day...so, I'll need to stockpile some meat first.
On a related note...is there any way to make meat sustainable? Sure it's easy to go out and kill some stuff, but if I'm going to have a bunch of crab pots I have to fill every day, what's the easiest way to go about keeping up with that?
The dive helmet is in the second level of the mines. I don't think it's rare as I got like 15 of them. And yes, you do need to bat, but if grub meat can be fairly farmed down in the undergrowth second mine level too. Or just hunt roos at night with a flash light to stun them.
