Lost an NPC

While on a Sunday, John's (npc) day off, I asked him to "hang out" and while running around the island he follows sometimes or gets stuck. Here's the real problem... I went fishing to the southern part of the island to do a favor request to fish up something and took out my row boat but John wouldn't get on, so I left him (John) at the beach area but then he started swimming but still wouldn't get on the boat. So I went off and fished til I got the fish I needed and when I came back John wasn't anywhere to be seen. Didn't think much of it and went back to town and slept til the next morning. Next day, can't find John anywhere in town or in his shop during normal business hours. I searched around the areas I dragged John to and can't find him anywhere? Any suggestions would be helpful
