I got into the habit of selling my animals back to Irwin when they are full hearts and replacing them - this keeps me in stock with normal eggs and milk.
that never works for me - the animals always climb to 5 hearts in time anyway
No surprise the farm animals are content even without you petting them - the neighbors are constantly going into the enclosures to pet your animals or water our fields in their free time. I have considered removing the door and just jumping over the fence, because there have been several occasions where they accidentally let the chickens out or dincus in x_x
As long as no dincus are around the chicken are relatively safe and they will return inside the enclosure at night, if you leave the gate open for them. Then you can close it after they fall asleep.
But I have started to sset up iron cages in front of the enclosure door and I basically catch a whole bunch of dincu every second day.
