My doggo got killed and I can't find his collar

Somehow, I lost track of my doggo. He must have gotten killed because he is no longer in my inventory. I've read that if a doggo gets killed, the collar drops as loot. I've been all over the island in the helicopter looking for the collar, but I have yet to find it. Does the collar de-spawn after a certain period of time? I don't want to waste time continuing to look for it if it's gone.

Dogs can swim. If a shark got him the collar might be under water.
