can i build anywhere i want to start or should i build close to the blimp landing dock?

You can go anywhere, the dock area is not special. Time does not start moving until you have set-up both the Base tent and your own tent, so you can take your time checking out the biomes, the land layout, and looking for a nice area that won't drive you insane trying to sculp the terrain to fit your needs.

I reloaded the start of the game a few times until I got a map I was happy with. Meaning a large central area. The main attraction of this, at least for me, was that when you get all 4 outer teleport towers fixed, you can have the 5th teleport made by Franklin set up right in the middle of the map making it much more useful.

I have one I like finally. it is in an area that wraps around to 3 different teleports East West and South and the north one is able to be reached across one channel. I did have to pen one wary mu that was too close to my town though.

I plopped my tent down right next to a lovely river vista and was eaten by crocs within a few minutes. So I started a new game. I found a safer location the second time.
