Best way to catch birds is to purchase the Torch (Flashlight) from John's Store (when he's a resident) , then wait till night time - equip torch and flash the torch on a resting bird - this will stun them - throw a trap on them and VOILA!

the easiest way is to have a narrow one field path between two objects, like two houses or a house & a row of boxes & to place on that one field in the evening a simple trap.
usually roos are trapped that way every day, magpies are second to be trapped & today i found even a cockatoo in there. only doggies break out & reset the trap.

cockatoos are otherwise trappable only in the way @Biggles has described, though they are fast & i flashed them often in air, which was not helpful
but magpies are fairly easy to catch in the night, you wait till they fly, set up a trap in some dark place, drop a piece of meat in the trap & wait. though don't do it in dailight, they are clever enough to steal the meat & not get caught. cockatoos are always too clever.
