Making grass grow in desert?
Is it possible to plant grass seeds in a desert biome and have them grow? not just turn the tile green, but to have actual grass sticking out like the ones in the tropics or pine areas for example.

thanks!

When you plant the grass changing the tile eventually grass will grow just takes a few days and some rain. You can terraform any biome.

heh, clarification for over here as well.

So instead of dropping 62 tropical grass seeds on-top of red soil. I should dig it up, put the seed in the ground and then, no matter what, it will stay tropical until I put a different seed type on it?

I mean I don't mind the extra step at all, but if the bio isn't really changing until I "plant" the seed....

I've got well over 2000 tropical seeds I "dropped" the wrong way.

I shall now go laugh (or cry) at myself.

I also tried to dig a hole first put the grass seeds, then cover it up and nothing happened...so I think the only way to plant grass is to just place it on the tile.

You only need to dig if there's already grass there you don't want. If it's bare dirt, just drop the grass seeds on it. I changed my desert area to the light green grass, and then decided I'd rather have fur grass. So I dug up all the light grass and replanted the dark.

Right. Burying the seed only puts the seed in a hole, it will never grow that way. Just spread it on the ground, you'll see the ground change color to the grass type you put there. After that, that grass type will grow there.

Edit - that tree type will also grow there. I cannot confirm yet if that kind of flower will also grow there or not.

I have confirmed that the grass will start growing after a few in game days. so far have not seen the trees or flowers. I planted a bunch in my animal coop area and grass started growing after a few days. when vombats eat the grass they can also drop some seeds so I collect those as well for future use :D

I do know that Pine grass will grow the Heath is it called? Flower, the purple one. And tropical will grow it's Flower too.

What does, at this time seem different, is that Gum trees will spawn new, (not respawn,) and start to grow fledglings of their own accord. I've had only one Pine that started by itself and that is it. It was a couple of patches ago that seems to have stopped. I've never seen, even in the wild, a Bush hard wood start, or in my own areas. And I can confirm both Palm types I need to plant, they don't start on their own.

To some extent, before, I thought it was grow area related. ie the Pine that started growth without being planted had a big transplanted fir grass area with only 2 planted pines in it. But it was my only success in that area for spontaneous.

btw, Does mowing hold back trees?
