eg Cooked Croco Meat combined with Dagwood Dog give you great protection
That's kind of always been the case, although the item in question you need isn't "vital."
I'd argue that the widespread use of iron for top tier items is more of a problem in being forced into the mines. Until you have like 20 quarries, you more or less have to go into the mines to get iron.
Collars, hang gliders, saddles, guitars, and bogey boards aren't key to the game. I left out slingshots as you can get those from gacha machines.
I've done just fine with two quarries, I've also been finding iron spawning in the world lately, and sometimes John sells iron bars. I've only gone into the mine maybe 3 times, I hate the bats and I don't want to deal with them.
The top tier items are not vital to the game either, they just make it a little easier.
I dislike bats too, but when I saw what you need in the next patch, I just grinded it out. Took like 4 runs into the mines to get enough. Urgh. I spent one mine run just hunting bats and treasure rooms and ignoring everything else.
Some iron spawns in rough soil, but it's not much. The mine really is the best source of a lot of iron. But once you get enough or just don't need to build much the mine becomes irrelevant.
Depends. Power tools eliminate the need for iron hammers, axes, and pickaxes and the battle shovel is the best. But kegs...the iron requirements on those are high and you need iron for Franklyn's vehicles. Mass scale farming isn't viable without the tractor.
To kill just jump and swing in there direction, you can kill multiple at once as it hits in an arc. Javelin or flaming bat works for me.
There are mods to alter them or get rid of them altogether, even to light the mine up so no need for the torch, which for me is the most annoying thing of having to constantly switch back and forth between torch and weapon/mining tool
