It is. a dev recently mentioned this and it's something to do with playstations side (they wont ofc divulge much on this) and their reluctance to do anything crossplay. they're trying to find a way around this but it'll take some time. I have a friend on ps4 too so i know the pain but i already knew sony's track record is like alcatraz when it comes to crossplay.

Like im under the impression they had to have like months of meetings just to decide if ps4 and ps5 could play together with how little they want to interact with anyone else

So you can play with console players but sony exclusivity means they can't allow inviting right now. all dumb i know but it definitely sounds like a sony move

So this version of cross play helps the overall playerbase, but not people that want to play with friends on different systems.
