I've seen tin lying on the ground but are there tin nodes in mountains you can mine or is it only something you see on the ground in the game?

Tin is also in nodes in mountains ... in my game there are nodes clearly visible at the surface, even larger areas are hidden beneath sand around the visible ones.

Whenever you find loose mineral deposits on the surface of the terrain, never pick them up!
Use them as clues/markers for what lies below in that location and dig there!
This goes for everything from Clay and Flint to various Rock types, or in this case, metal ores ;)

There are definitely tin and copper deposits in the mountains. Look for blue colored areas for tin, and green for copper. I usually try to settle close to a mountain side that has both elements visible.
