Langrisser I & II

I would prefer the English Warsong names
I am sure this won't happen, but I would really like the option to use the character names used in the original Langrisser translation, Warsong, than the actual names. Calais is just a much better name for a wizard than Jessica in my opinion, Mina is a more interesting name than Chris, and Garrett sounds better than Ledin. I know many people hate when names in anime and games are changed for English releases, but sometimes I think there is a good reason for it.

well...

there is nothing inherently wrong with preferring one or the other, however as you said a lot of people do not like name changes, including me. so I would neither expect it nor think that the community would want it.

Even if there may be reasons for some changes in some media (I would disagree with that but oh well) I can hardly see any in Langrisser.

Langrisser was created in the times were most japanese really liked to just use western words or names in their games so all of the names are perfectly suitable for western audiences.

The worst may be "Böser" as a german the "name" is a bit stupid (meaning literally "the bad one" in a very child friendly way...)

but even that is no skin of my back as I can accept the style the game(s) have been made in as products of their time and just as the old artwork it is glorious.

There's no good reason for it here. Your nostalgia over the old localisation changing the character names for no reason isn't a good reason.
My reason isn't just nostalgia, it's that I think Jessica and Chris are stupid names for characters in a fantasy setting

After playing with Jessica for 5 games in the series its the only name i can associate with her.
Also "Chris" is more like "Kris" in Japanese and that sounds like a totally fine "fantasy" name.

That's totally fair. Changing the spelling to Kris would actually go a long way towards making it seem more appropriate, in my opinion. I was fine with Khris in Shining Force, but the Shining series has always been a little strange in that most of them start out almost entirely fantasy but by the end you are fighting robots and coming across alien space ships and stuff.

The name Jessica makes me think of this Onion video now, though:

I understand you. Many of these names sound fine in Japanese because of the pronunciation.
And for the Japanese player western names sound "exotic" and thus are often used in Fantasy games.
I cant count the amount of JRPG with characters who have German names, or at least what Japanese developers THINK are German names. It can get quiet funny.

I remember that one game from the Atelier series where a party member was called " Kugel Richter". Which yes, both are German words, Kugel means Ball and Richter means Judge.
So now i had a guy in the party who was literally called "Ball Judge" .

Jessica in the Japanese dub is pretty much pronounced "Jishka" which does not sound that bad.
It took me years of playing the Japanese games on my Sega Saturn to even realize her name is supposed to be "Jessica". Was from a artbook i think i read that the first time.

That's what Localization is for. it isn't just a strait translation.

Jessica was changed to Calais in the original for Warsong, because in Japan, Jessica Was a "cool sounding exotic name" to the Japanese Audience, and so a 'Cool sounding exotic name'

Calais was given to her in the English Localization because it is Exotic to American ears. It was / is good localization, to preserve the intended flavor of the character to the player in it's own language.

I'm not saying I'd require one over the other for this games translation, but I understand it both ways.

For what it's worth, I like it when Final Fantasy characters have fantastic names like Celes, Sabin, Cloud, Aeris, Locke, and so on over regular (but once exotic sounding to the original Japanese audience) names like Bart, Sarah, Maria, Leon, Cecil, Rosa, etc. Those names may be cool and exotic once upon a time to Japanese ears, but to mine they just sound like people I meet every day. Not fantastic.

I do not know where this notion is coming from. Again it does not bother me that the main evil character of Langrisser is called "Böser" even if i am German.

That is, because I can accept the origin of the work, this whole argument sounds a bit like we need someone to help us understand this context which i would argue we overwhelmingly do not.

It is really weird for a non-Christian based fantasy game to have a character named Chris.
