The bonus was the original Satoshi Urushihara character artwork ingame itself, replacing the newer more generic art.
But it was pretty half-assed since they just took art from a Langrisser Artbook to replace the new models.
So the old artwork is complete static while the new one is animated when talking and such.
And for some characters no old artwork exist anymore so they use the new design anyway which clashes horrible with the classic design.
old portraits in game.
Yeah, also the old portraits are not even animated, just stills while the new artstyle ones have animation.
They also did not have old style portraits for all characters ( since there are new ones in Langrisser 1) so its a mix of old and new style.
Not really great.
Honestly, after watching someone play the first 2-3 stages of the Switch version on Youtube i dont think i will get the game.
The unit art and battles look absolutely dreadful, like some super low budget mobile game.
I honestly prefer to play the originals on Emulator above this.
I do really understand that people do not like the new artworks i prefer the old ones as well.
You seem to be one of the more active members on the board, meaning you seem to know how great the originals are.
I know it's somewhat sub-optimal but at the same time the mechanics were quite flawed. I have played Der Langrisser A LOT and everyone who has should be able to remember Meteor spamming, some maps were you have to move without doing anything until you reach you enemies and units attacking each other without any effect (just so they get healed next round)
I do welcome them trying to update the gameplay not because it was broken or anything but because it can be way less flawed.
Additionally the sprite work of the old games were far from perfect, it's literally chibi soldiers running at each others making odd sounds. You have to understand as well that the models themself do not represent the units fighting power and HP in the new system either so that clarity is not needed in the same way.
What I'm trying to say is easy: Yeah maybe it looks like a mobile port, maybe the new artwork is pretty generic compared to the old (but here we get the option at least).
Maybe the new systems do not pan out, maybe they are even worse than the original.
BUT there hasn't been a Langrisser in ages, people in the west do not know that this series is the literal cousin to fire emblem, they do not know that the games have a great story a gigantic amount of content and a very impressive legacy to boot. (From langrisser series to growlanser series)
If this game flops the series will drop dead completely again (possibly forever) in the west and while things aren't perfect they will also never improve if the series does not get a chance to actually make money.
In any case, everyone who actually is interested in the game(s), give it a try, even if the mechanics turn out to be flawed the foundation is a genuine masterwork title (Mostly Der Langrisser)
When i played the demo you could not, no.
In fact if you change to the old Artwork you actually change the map as well, meaning it looks like the SNES version.
I can't be sure that this hasn't been changed but I doubt it, it simply was an option to change everything.
All the characters and units have these goofy smiles on their face and it just looks terrible when the fighting animation plays.
Everything just looks too "clean" and "kiddy".
Langrisser always had a serious atmosphere, comparable with the old Fire Emblem games of the time, this just looks too bright and colorful in my opinion.
Also i never said i am against modernizing the combat system since like you wrote it was easily exploitable.
But i doubt this new one will change that, i already watched a few videos of a Japanese player finishing a lot of stages in 1-2 turns.
And since you now can apparently replay each stage as often as you want from a chapter select menu, it will be even easier to make your whole army overpowered.
Also i am not a big fan of the game blatantly showing you in a flowchart where the story routes divulge and the conditions for it.
It was a big part of the reason i loved "The Langrisser" so much that i discovered the different routes on my own.
In the end, i still will probably get this game, because like you wrote, it IS the first Langrisser game in ages.
And i wouldnt mind a remake of Langrisser 4/5 in a similar fashion.
