Forgot to say as well that the base stations track the controllers as they are wireless but I might be wrong.
I don't think they will go back in stock anytime soon on steam. It hasn't been in stock for a while and there must be some sort of reason behind it.
Which mysteriously does not affect HTC selling the _exact_ same hardware with _exact_ same chip, but with shorter wire and no mount and for $50 extra.
Its not the "_exact_" same hardware. HTC manufactures their own lighthouse base stations. It is the same technology and design but they are HTC parts. They are two different companies with significantly different manufacturing relationships and Valve is largely focused delivering Steam Deck and as such have likely shifted production capacity toward that. Varjo's stock of basestations I believe is Valve manufactured parts but I haven't gotten anyone who have ordered basestations from Varjo to confirm.
I stand corrected, they are in fact the exact same hardware now. Also the ones from Varjo do also appear to be Valve manufactured parts, including the power cables/brick, just marked up $100
This means its probably a lot less mysterious, as HTC and Varjo are probably purchasing the bulk of Valve's manufacturing capacity for them with Valve only retaining enough to fill the HMD + Basestation and Full kits.
