Valve index controller joystick drift issue
So this problem only started happening about a day or 2 ago. For some reason now my left joystick thinks I'm still pushing it in the last direction I had it in before I released it. This is an annoying issue because it causes my character in games to slowly move when dont want them to. Tried it in two games so far and it acts the exact same in both games: "Blade and sorcery" and "pavlov". I went into the controller menu where it shows what buttons are being pressed and sure enough, when I take my thumb off the joystick, it still thinks im pushing it in the last direction I had it in before release. So to counter this I changed the joystick deadzone all the way up to 50%... no changes. However the physical joystick returns to the original position in the middle with no problem. Only having this issue with my left controller. The fact that this issue occured out of nowhere leads be to believe this is a software issue due to the recent updates. Anybody else having this issue?

yea if I can score some of those that sounds good.
I've got some 3d printed blocks wedged against it but my issues are from the other 2 sides so I fear I may need to print something to fit over the entire thing very snug and push on all 4 walls. My currently wedged bits had little to no effect.

will look for some of those bands at the store that does sound easier.

Same here. My left joystick arrived broken. This is getting disappointing. I specifically bought the index for Saints and sinners and Alyx. I bought the game and upon booting up my first game, lord behold, broken joy stick. I've yet to even play a games with this brand new system. It's been almost 3 weeks since I started this RMA and they've barely sent the item back on a turtles back. You would think, they'd at least use 2 day service or send them back to you as soon as you send yours in. But nope, they treat you as if you're trying to scam. I waited 5 days from when they received the item. At that point I had enough, and only until I complained they created a shipping label. I am disgusted with valve and this entire experience, and I wished I had never bought this and stayed with my Oculus Rift. I bought a Quest recently, and I am about ready to dump this garbage in the trash., so much for premium. I hope you are all reading this, you suck. 1000+ Dollars for a trophy sitting on my desk with zero play time. Get your crap together.

It's nowhere near as bad for Nintendo. My brother has been tormenting his Switch for.. I dunno.. two years? And joycons don't show a sign of dying. He'd burn through a dozen Index Controllers in that timespan.

So i have friends with more failures, less then 100 hours... I've made it 160 hours on my replacement controllers, but i don't push the joystick button to run anymore. I use outer edge to run when I play onward. It sucks to know the controllers will fail again. Hopefully the delay they are going through right now makes an improvement on the joysticks...

I've got 1,000+ hours in steamVR apparently, daily, since about release + 1 month, but they started drifting if I had to guess around 500 hours or less. Still sucks, would be ok if I could buy new ones but they wont sell em.

This issue started for me today. Pretty annoying, since now games are practically unplayable until I get a new controller.
Is there any way to switch the thumbstick with the trackpad? At this point I'd rather use the trackpad for movement instead of the thumbstick if possible.

Valve is doing an advanced replacement RMA of my left Index controller for this issue. We’re all passionate about our gaming. It sucks when something stops working. Work with Steam Support if you are having this issue. They may ask you to do something you’ve already done to troubleshoot. Have patience and cooperate. They are people like you. You’ll get far better results with respect and understanding. I’m sure you’ve read about challenges with production (of everything, not just Index). RMA replacement may take time due to limited availability.

TIP: The Index controller’s serial number is printed on the inside of the tracking bar that is above your wrist when used. It is down from the printed logo. On mine it is a faint gray color that I didn’t initially see without a bright light. I used a smartphone camera with flash to take a pic then enlarged to see the number.

TIP2: LOL I wanna paly ALYX now! =D The left thumbstick normally gets all the wear from moving/use in games. If waiting for a replacement gets too much you can remap the movement to the right stick and unmap the left. Set movement direction relative to HMD/look direction. It takes getting used to and is not ideal. Good thing not much ‘twitch’ combat or PVP with ALYX ;P.

I couldn't either of the 2 times I RMA'd. For my second RMA they also insisted I only send in my left controller.

Yea I used to process RMAd voip phones, so I after I dutifully answered their questions and performed all steps suggested (im typing in my 'official' mode now, and was then as well).

After I performed the suggested steps, and they told me to return it for RMA, I very politely asked if it would be possible to ship-first RMA for me, and I also offered them a deposit for the ship-first.

Steam be like: no.

So I'm like.... ok... fine... just sell me a brand new one then... can you take my order.. here is my money.

Steam be like: no.

So I stopped replying to the ticket and it kept my lil envelope green for over a month before the poor guy closed it on tippy toes at 2am (yes I saw that!). Issue was never resolved, I've got half a mind to reopen the ticket and stare at them from their tasklist for another month.

Soon as that fedex gets here in a few, I'll try to convince myself to forget all about this.

They better have fixed these damn things, if I have to do this twice I may turn into a rabid monster.

Hi Index friends,

can anybody confirm they already got the new version of the controller Tyriell talks about in the video? I just recently got drift on my controllers and like others already posted I would like to have to go through the procedure only once if possible.

Started 'drifting' with our left controller while playing Alyx. Then it just got worse and worse. In UK, and controllers purchased about 4 months ago, so Steam RMA'd the left controller. They've sent us a replacement before I even dispatched the broken one. Not bad. Took about four days, start to finish, mainly waiting for replies from them. Pretty good service.
