can you actualy stay as non or low rank during the whole game ?

Many situations can be experienced from a different perspective depending on your military rank. For example, as an optio there is a branch in the Battle of Ilipa in which you can get lost in the rain and run into a unique opponent.

And yes, it is possible to play through the whole game without receiving a single promotion, though you will probably have to play with low stats or deliberately perform poorly in combat. Even a small success may be enough to get the first promotion to tesserarius. Reaching the ranks of optio or centurion requires a much bigger effort.
