Cups are awarded for engaging and defeating an enemy voluntarily (e.g. by challenging him to a duel). There are a lot of situations in which you can do this.
A Mural Crown is awarded for being the first man over the wall of a besieged town. There are three points in the game where you can take part in a siege: one in the second campaign (Africa), two in the third campaign (Macedonia).
There are also Civic Crowns. These awards are given to a legionary who has voluntarily risked his life to save a Roman citizen from getting killed by the enemy. Each campaign (Hispania, Africa, Macedonia) has one unique situation in which this is possible.
The most valuable award is the Grass Crown. This award can only be earned by saving an entire legion in battle. There is only one situation in the game in which this is possible, and it is very hard to pull off.
As you can see I've avoided spoilers so far. If you want to know more details, just go ahead and ask.
The three Mural Crowns:
The first siege in which you can win a Mural Crown takes place at the beginning of part 8. You have to conquer an unnamed Carthaginian town in Africa. The second event is the siege of Peles in part 10. The last opportunity to win a Mural Crown is the siege of Phaloria in part 11. All the sieges have the same structure: You can help the engineers build siege ladders and then participate in the assault. To get the Mural Crown you have to kill a certain number of enemies (maybe 8 or so) within a specified number of turns. If you take too long, another legionary will be faster than you. During the first two sieges you will fight poorly trained militiamen. In the third siege you will go up against garrison mercenaries with better training and equipment. The number of turns you have to get a Mural Crown during a siege battle is determined by a formula which Sertorius explained in another thread. I'll post a link here:

The first Civic Crown (Hispania):
During the third battle in Hispania, you have to volunteer to be a scout. At a certain point, you will have to pass a difficult awareness check. If you succeed, you will notice sounds of a distant fight. Now you need to hurry. Select the option which makes your legionary run towards the noise as fast as possible. This leads to a quickness check which you need to pass as well. Then you will see a legionary fighting against three caetrati. Rush to his aid immediately (this is not possible with a low virtue character). After this, there will be a fight in which you have to kill the caetrati and keep your fellow legionary alive. If you can pull this off, the Civic Crown is yours.
The second Civic Crown (Africa):
During the Battle of the Great Plains (part 7) you will see a group of velites fighting against five Numidian spearmen. To win the Civic Crown, you have to run to their aid, win a very dangerous fight against five opponents, and carry the only surviving veles back to the Roman battle line. If you fail a strength/quickness check, you will also have to protect him from a cavalry attack, which leads to a difficult and dangerous shield skill check.
The third Civic Crown (Macedonia)
In the battle of part 9, there is a situation in which you can travel through a forest or a marshland. Go for the forest. After entering it, one of your legionaries will have an accident, making him unable to walk. You need to help him, which leads to a coordination check. Shortly after that you will be attacked by two peltasts. To save the injured legionary, you need to kill the first peltast in less than 10 turns. Then you have to fight and kill the second peltast. After this fight, the Civic Crown is yours.
The Grass Crown
In the final battle you have to break through the phalanx twice in a row and kill four phalangites each time. If you are a centurion and pass a very difficult intellect check, you can then lead your men into the breach, which leads to a very dangerous fight against several Thracian warriors. Kill them in less than 60 turns and the Grass Crown is yours.
That Grass Crown sounds reeeeeeeeally hard... o_o
