what could be the perfect spiderweb game?
Cant give spiderweb a thumbs down, been playing there games since the exile series:
Jeff needs to go back to the reason why exile 3 was one of the greatest RPGs ever, the perfect game is Exile 3 with the following changes:
- Art and graphics like Sunless sea
- Story telling like Dark Souls ie. not a lot of dialogue - smart dark story telling
- Increased difficulty, always challenging till end game
- Turn based fast combat
- Huge open world like exile 3
- Focus on Atmosphere, Fast difficult Combat, Exploration, No need to waste effort on story/character/dialogue

Queen's Wish: The Conqueror seems have a good chance to become my favorite, before it was Avernum 1 followed by Avadon 1. Quote that the Avernum last reboot failed caught me, as all Exile that for me suffered the comparison with ReamlZ. For Exile it's too late for last reboot, I still have hope that another try could work, and eventually I wasn't in the right mood when I tried Avernum 1&2 last reboot.

Avernum 2 is just not as good than Avernum 1. For Avernum 3 by leaving the marking idea of underground world with huge caverns, it miss the point, but I admit I never played it past a quick try.

Avernum 1 key points:
- Genius design idea of three main quests, and very well implemented.
- Most open of all probably until Queen's Wish: The Conqueror.
- Feeling of adventure and discovery that haven't any other Avernum and Spiderweb game. It's not the tourism aspect.
- Underworld huge caverns with weird vegetation, no sun, light from mushroom and magic, bizarre common animals variations coming from their food and absence of sun.

If one Spiderweb game would worth to be made AAA, it's Avernum 1 with a technology that can implement huge caverns, light from mushrooms, weird vegetation, bizarre common animals variations coming from their food and absence of sun.

That said there's many aspects in the game that would need be changed/improved for an AAA appraoch. And to be realistic, no way the sells could justify the budget.

For me, having also owned and played every Spiderweb Software game, i honestly and truly think they're getting closer and closer to perfection. Loved the Avernum series, then prefered the Avadon series since it made things more story and adventure-centric, and now really like Queen's Wish since it's even closer to a pure romp in adventure land with emphasis getting even more focused on the story and adventure aspect.

Maybe it's just because I'm aging right along with the games, so am less and less inclined on micro-managing, busywork, puzzle solving, and theory-crafting. I just want a good adventure with a great story, and it seems that Spiderweb games are going in that direction right along with me.

So in my honest opinion, Queen's Wish is the best SS game to date. It's even got me wanting to replay the Avadon series just to understand how much of a progression QW is step-wise from Avernum to Avadon to QW.

I personally liked the perspective from two opposite sides in nethergate as well as the perk humor in it.

But as rejenn says, I am also getting old, so I appreciate the simplicity in Queen's wish, but I do miss all the funny skill imagery and attainable abilities and secret skills.

I hear you. Nethergate:Resurrection is my personal quiet favorite Spiderweb Software game.

I really liked the historical twist, with the Romans vs the Celts theme. For me, especially with being a major history buff of that era, it's the most relateable game he made, even if it did have magic.

It's a title I mentioned more than once about wishing for an update to, or a wish for another historical romp since that is an open, fertile ground that seems mostly untouched.

The story/choices of Geneforge series (with stuff like diplomacy and stealth) combined with companions with personalities such as Avadon. Oh crap, I just described Geneforge 3, didn't I? Which was a very flawed game...
So hopefuly Geneforge 3 when it gets remastered around 5 years from now. :)
Also, big font size.

I think what is the perfect game would differ depending on subjective tastes.:) like I love the geneforge series cause how they are similar to the first two fallouts. I like Avadon cause of how it is similar to the Bioware RPGs, But I just bounce off an Avernum demo when I tried it. Combat/exploration is an important part of an RPG but my favorite part is feeling like my choices can impact the story and having multiple solutions to choose from for quests.. In fact, I prefer smaller areas in genera... I guess this is one of hte big problems for Jeff Vogel, everyone wants different things, so if he tries some new things like in Queen's wish it turns off some people but also pleases some people. (note I haven't played Queen's wish yet..)

Edit- Oh I haven't played it but I think the topic poster would like Underrail a lot.

Blasphemer!

Seriously though, story/character/dialogue are a large part of what makes a Spiderweb game a Spiderweb game. Take that away, or make it like in Dark Souls, and you won't have a Spiderweb game anymore.

I hate the souls story telliing myself, when I play a game I want to be told a story not hunt through 10,000 item descriptions to piece a vague idea of a story together.

I don't see why people enjoy that, get that they do, and don't have a problem with it... but to me it's the Worst kind of story telling there is.

To each his own taste i guess,
Me personally been playing RPGs for a long long time, I lost the interest in reading whole paragraphs of text unless it is a near perfect story, Im talking Panescape Torment level, telling a story like Dark Soul does is by no means an easy feat, it is a fine balance between atmosphere, art, gameplay..etc.
What defines an RPG game is not well established. For me, the main elements are an intriguing game world that needs to be explored, rewards and secrets, persistent challenge. I dont need lines and lines of dialogue and prefer a dark themed atmospheric experience.

Wait, wait, wait. We are assuming Dark Souls tells a story. Last time I checked, it just threw enemies at you. If you want to know about Dark Souls story you need to look over the internet and then go to a forum to say that Dark Souls has revolutionary story telling -checking lore in internet, what a wonderful, meaningful and revolutionary new kind of story telling-. Ah, but wait! Dark Souls story is written in object descriptions!

Ahem.

Don't take me wrong, I like Dark Souls, but story telling is NOT its strong point. Also, spiderweb games does something almost anyone does these days: using text to tell a well crafted story. Jeff is a supberb writer and I love that his games are so full of text. For me, a spiderweb without much text would be... I don't know. I hope it never happnes.
