Where can I gets extra shard slots?

I am an "easy mode, just play the story" player and I don't always go after all the collectables along the way. Late in the game, that's an issue. All the completely necessary abilities are in the main path. I do go to all the spirit trees and I do pick up a lot of shards and shells, but I don't go too far off for them and some that I can see I give up on. Anyway, somewhere early on I remember having a chance to buy an extra shard slot, but I did't. Who/where was that? Other places? Near a spirit well is a good bonus...

Extra Shard Slots are only earned via combat trial shrines that are scattered around the world map. When you active them, you start clearing waves of enemies until it is done and you get an extra slot.

OK, I went and did one and beat everything. No new shard slot. EDIT - went back and it was just floating there for me to jump up and grab...

Thank you for explaining. I also completed a combat trial and forgot to grab it. I really think that it should be given automatically to players after the trial, because it is easy to miss that among the lights.

I must've forgot to grab one slot because I did all the shrines but now that I check the achievements I didn't finish that one, weird.
