Steam Backgrounds: a failure

Backgrounds are NOT supposed to be low-quality screenshots with blurry black borders like some people think.

The parts that can actually be seen on a non-empty profile are left and right sides. The middle is normally obscured by various blocks with information, unless the user jumps through hoops to cut a piece of a background and uploads it as art showcase.

So your blurry in-game screenshots with Ori in the middle will almost never show Ori in profiles of users.

What people actually want is custom drawn detailed art with Ori and other characters on sides.

Ori and the Blind Forest's backgrounds weren't perfect, but they were usable, they did show key parts on sides. They're still in-game screenshots (or built from in-game art, not sure), but at least people designing them have actually tested how the images will look in profiles.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps' backgrounds mostly look like random pictures of nature. We only get to see Twillen. And the rare "Willow's End" background is just plain blurry because it wasn't meant for this resolution.

Ori's backgrounds could be so beautiful... but no. Sigh. Such a wasted opportunity.

Sadly I have to agree. These backgrounds are just horrible, Willows End which is the one I'm using now is......ok I guess but even that one could have been better. Like you I wanted clear crisps backgrounds with Ori and other characters in them, instead we get what is essentially a blurry mess.

A shame a real shame.

If you want good desktop wallpapers, you should check out art on DeviantArt. Some fanart is really good. There's also some official art in hi-res for both games (on wallpaper sites...).

Sad negligence. I was thinking that they at least have no troubles with making something look nice.
