Triple jump in spirit trials

I just completed the spring spirit trial and looking at the leaderboard ghosts i saw how some people skipped half of the course by triple jumping and damage boosting.
i would hav tried that too, but even if i have the triple jump skill eqquipped, it does not work during spirit trials, it only does in normal gameplay.
Do you think these people are exploiting some kind of bug that let's them use this skill?
or am i experiencing some bug where i should be able to use it and i'm not?
