Necromancer Boss... (switch)
Before you ask; I’ve read the two other threads on this... and everything else I could find elsewhere on the net.

I’m loving this game; but I cannot get past the necromancer. Gave up, farmed for the armor, gave up again, got the l2 sword... and still here. Have 6 hearts & 2 potions. Watched a guy on YouTube do it without getting hit.

Read a few posts that indicate you can continue on without beating him... not the case on the switch?

Needless to say I’m fairly frustrated at this point; especially since I’d like to experience more than basically the beginning of the game. Easily 30+ rounds over several days. I’m not getting much further than the hat throw, and repeating over and over isn’t helping. I’ve yet to get even close to killing him. Up to this point it’s been a blast. Now I’m just pissed.

It is possible to have 3 bottles at this point, which might help a bit. Not sure which one you're missing, but there's one in Icepeak, accessible from the Cathedral, one in Poison Pavilion, just as you enter, above the first checkpoint and one that you start with.

Regarding the Necromancer - the trick is to not move around too much, and notice how he telegraphs his attacks. The usual strategy is to keep on the left side of the screen, and keep an eye on what he does before the next attack.

He has two basic patterns during the first half of the fight:

1) Either he leans back, which means he's about to dash. In that case, be prepared to jump and down attack on him. He'll always make his way back to the right side after that attack. Either by jumping to the opposite wall, or by running/dashing back.

2) ... Or, he'll point with his staff, which means he'll jump to and cling to the wall. At that point, simply stand still. Or, if you accidentally jump because you misread it for the other attack, try to move to the right so you don't accidentally jump up into him. When he's clinging to the wall, he always shoots skulls in the same pattern. Position your character so you don't get hit, and jump up and hit him a few times.

For the second half, it's mostly the same thing, except he adds the hat throw and the energy waves into the mix. The hat throw is easiest to just jump over (and down attack just in case if you accidentally hit the hat - if you hit the hat, it'll give you a heart too). The energy waves can be double jumped over.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Found a video that shows pretty much the way I mean (and the way I tend to beat him):

I honestly can't understand WHY this boss is so hard. When the difficulty is not based around figuring out how to kill the boss but in fact based around the idea that you will have to hit the boss an extreme amount of times the exact same way, its just artificial and repetitive. I'm going to have to give up on this game, as the ethos seems to be in favor of placing gatekeeper bosses that only the most skilled and determined players can beat. There's countless people complaining about difficulty spikes and the response is always "Try 30 times, Get Gud". I absolutely wish I could refund this. The core of the game is good but there's no reason for this to be so hard.

Stand in corner, downslash, rinse repeat. Try to avoid his attacks. Not too hard once you figure out how to move. Fire some arrows while your at it.
