Performance issue on Old Machine?
Hey there :-)

I purchased the game on GoG during the Sale, but I noticed the Steam forum is much more active. I own an old PC. Not to kind to run Triple A games on max settings, but enough to run most indie games (including the more demanding games like for example Hallow Knight or Ori at 60 FPS). However, Cathedral seems to challenge my PC. I'm at 44 FPS in the menus, and around 25-30 in-game. Randomly, the game will shutter (freeze for half a second). When I jump, Walk, pick items. etc.

So, I tried to address it by setting the resolution lower (up until 640x480!) and I get the same FPS, and the hiccups are still there. So while the machine is indeed older, something about the static FPS even when decreasing the resolution to a base line - feel odds (again, especially when other indie games as even some Tripple A games like Overwatch work good here).

I can leave with 30 FPS, but this constants shuttering make it impossible to play. I tried to play around with the game VSync option, with the card, Window/Full screen - check the config file to see if I can effect anything - and nada.

I really want to play Cathedral, as Metroidvania fan, this is right at my ally. Is there perhaps some insight you can share?

I'm running version 1.2.0.

Thanks!

Hi there.

Very strange - seeing what you're experiencing, it might be related to disk access (a lot of actions save the game, such as picking up items etc.). It shouldn't be too heavy, especially since we limit the number of times the game writes to disk to a maximum of once per second, but if it slows down considerably while doing those actions, it could explain it a bit,

We actually have an update on the way which will feature a large number of performance fixes to make it run smoother on lower-end hardware. I don't have an ETA currently, and I can't guarantee that it'll fix the issues you're having, but hopefully it will.

We'll post announcements once the update is complete.

Hi Lavesson,

Thank you for the reply. Well, it's not an SSD drive, but I never had problem previously. It's not only happening when I picked items for example. It's almost happens on intervals. I can reproduce it just by moving from side to side. Or jumping.

Is there's any Beta branch or anything like that I can test? just to be able to know if this will be play-able on my hardware in the future or I should try to get a refund now when it's possible? (I really want to play this game! :-))

Feel free to contact me privately if I can be any help.
