Hardmode?
I'm buying this tomorrow, just curious about hardmode. It looks like it's not worth the try, it deletes your world and everything you have just because you died? Isn't that a bit much? Also, does anyone want to play together? Or I can just join your server.

Whoa whoa whoa!! Allow me to explain. When you create a character then you can set that specific character's difficulty. On easy mode you'll drop half your carried coins when you die, but you can reclaim them by returning to your death place. On medium difficulty you drop everything you're carrying but, just like in easy mode, you can reclaim your dropped items by travelling back to your death place. The hardest character difficulty means that your character and everything you're carrying gets deleted forever.

Now for some silly reason, there's this hard mode for worlds which is different than hard mode for players. This just means that you've reached a milestone in the game by defeating a certain tough boss and new content such as weapons, enemies and biomes are unlocked for you to discover. Most importantly, your world is always safe from being deleted no matter what you do in the game.

*YOUR WORLD NEVER GETS DELETED AS PUNISHMENT FOR DEATH OR ANYTHING!*

I personally have a hardcore character in hardmode (Using a heavily boosted start with my friends) but I must say it's VERY fun but as Sivric said it is in NO WAY MANDITORY

K thanks for the replies. When I get into hardmode, what happens when I die? And how is it more fun than softcore?
Mister Froggeh Sep 27, 2012 @ 9:37pm
There's two different kinds of difficulty, CHARACTER and MAP

Character Difficulty will alter what happens in accordance to if (and when) your character reaches death:

Softcore: Character drops half of currently owned money onto the ground and respawns at last slept bed or spawnpoint if no bed is present
Mediumcore: Character drops all items and respawns at last slept bed or spawnpoint if no bed is present
Hardcore: Character is deleted and the world he or she died on is removed (I believe) and you will not respawn.

Map Difficulty will alter what kind of mobs spawn in the world as well as adding a new "Biome"

Regular: Average monsters which generally pose minimal threat to anyone equipped in any proper equipment remaining on the surface which gradually get harder as you dig down
HardMode: Powerfull monsters matching in strength of that of the "Hell" monsters on Regular difficulty, that is the mobs that spawn where all the lava is at the bottom of the map. This mode also spawns the "Hallow" which is quite fun and will have varying things happening underground, with some powerful new enemies in corrupt land as well.

Entering hardmode map will in NO WAY alter your CHARACTERS difficulty

If your character is an easy difficulty character and you die while your world is in hardmode then:
1) You respawn with 50% less coins. Your missing coins have been dropped where you died and can be retrieved.
2) Your world remains exactly the same.

If your character is a medium difficulty character and you die while your world is in hardmode then:
1) You respawn with ONLY starter gear which are the copper tools and shortsword. Your missing items have been dropped where you died and can be retrieved.
2) Your world remains exactly the same.

If your character is a hard difficulty character and you die while your world is in hardmode then:
1) You do not respawn and all items you carried when you died are gone forever.
2) Your world remains exactly the same.

Hardmode, which is the mode your world changes into after you kill a certain boss, is more fun because it unlocks new monsters, items, weapons, and armor. I do find it silly how there are hardmode characters who are deleted upon death and hardmode worlds which just means you have tougher enemies roaming around. There is absolutely no relationship between a hardmode character and a hardmode world.

K thanks for all the explanations guys. Most likely will go softcore, and kill the Eater of Worlds or whoever I need to kill to get the world. Thanks :). Do you guys know of any good servers?
Mister Froggeh Sep 27, 2012 @ 10:10pm
Host one, it'd be WAYYYY easier, by my experience all the "good" servers are generally nuked to hell, have so many mods that it takes away the fun of the game, are allready built to maximum and just roleplay or have too many players as is

How do I host one? Is it hard? Is there a website where you can host one on your own like there is for Minecraft?
