I haven't played for a very long time so I'm not sure if these were added in 1.2, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are they nasty. What makes it even worse is that they can climb on the background. Hell, I just quit the game because I had a spider chasing my new character! Is there any way to change the models to something else, like bears?

NEW version 1.02, replaces Blood Creepers, Wall Creepers, Jungle Creepers and Black Recluse with big blobs. What's missing are gore replacements for the Jungle Creeper and Black Recluse (I can't find the graphics...or the mobs in the game to test).

I think that bears would be an equally disturbing replacement. But you could look around on the forums or take some links here. You aren't the only one, and people have been working on modding replacements in for those who have arachnophobia.

I don't have Arachnophobia, and most game spiders don't bother me, but Terraria Spiders freak me out o__o

I was exploring the crimson for the first time with my main, having pre-1.2 best weps and armor with legendary modifiers. I saw one spider and proceeded to dump 500 rounds of cursed bullets into my surroundings before alt-f4ing.

Just use a boomerang weapon or a flail with strong knock-back, and throw the heck out of it whenever you come across a spider nest.

There are actually Moths (1000 HP, hits like a truck) in the Hardmode Underground Jungle (try sayin' that 5 times fast) which drop, of all things, Butterfly Dust about half the time when killed. That, combined with 20 Souls o' Flight, makes a decent pair of wings that I think look stupid as hell.

Either way, Moths are in Terraria, and they are huge.

I'm all for it. After all, the only thing scary about spiders in Terraria is how stupid high the damage Black Recluses do.

90 damage, man. That's on the same level as Skeletron Prime. If it weren't for their relatively low health, I'd be screaming "RELOGIC PLS NERF" at the top of my lungs.
