As for the difficulty of finding gold in a small world, I couldn't really tell you because i've never played on a small world for any length of time. I found them to be too small to be any fun for me since half of what I find enjoyable about the game is exploring the massive cave networks.
The red glow you were seeing was most likely the lava layer as you suspected but as long as you don't see a different background (where the hell layer starts) you should be fine. Just don't fall in the lava and go hunting for more ore/loot. It helps a lot if you've faced a goblin invasion so you can buy rocket boots but it isn't necessary.
I was about to recommend you to generate a new small world since they've been very mineral-dense for me but it seems you have little luck with them... Still, generate a new world just to stripmine and deforest.
But anyway, if you can, create a set of the best armor you can. Be sure to get your priorities straight, too. This means use your new bars of metal on things you need most; it goes something like this:
1.) Tools (pickaxe > hammer or axe > whatever's left over)
2.) Armor (chest > helmet or legs > whatever's left over)
3.) Weapons (go mostly by preference).
4.) Everything else
Naturally, armor will take priority over any non-pickaxe tool if you find yourself dieing alot or easily.
As for the blue moon, and the rocket boots, and the nightmare helm... i got them off an online session. People just threw money and items at me for being a noob with a bucket on my head xD. Felt like cheating, but even with those, i'm struggling in the game.
And meh, i so wish i could play with a gamepad... Wonder if 1.2 will have gamepad support. Specially since my phone doesn't seem to be able to run the game :P
Well, that's not a TERRIBLE priority order but mine tends to go more like this:
1. Pickaxe (starting at gold, I don't bother with iron/silver picks)
2. Weapon (the faster it dies the less it can hurt you)
3. Armor (I typically hold onto ore till I can make full sets because the set bonuses provide more defense than any single upgrade)
4. Everything else
I often don't make a new hammer/axe until either the demonite or meteorite versions unless I plan to do an aweful lot of building. I only make the demonite hammer/axe because they fit into the weapon category to me (doing considerable damage and having good reach/knockback) and I only ever make one or the other.
The meteor hamaxe is both necessary for grabbing hellforges (though you could always use a pick/hammer to break whatever it's resting on instead) and a convenient replacement for both your hammer and axe in your inventory.
Finally, armor has a fairly minimal level of importance imo until hardmode. Defense only decreases damage by 1/2 its listed value (rounded up) so it's never blocking a HUGE amount of damage. I see them as more of a helpful booster you can use as an ore sink since you'll usually end up with far more than you need for weapons/tools. The later ones also provide special effect in their set bonuses that generally make them far better choices than just the one with the highest defense value.
2: I didn't fight ANY boss yet.
3: I'm terrible with mouse and keyboard, so i'm taking things slowly. [had already a heavily modded oblivion eating almost half of my keyboard plus a mouse with three extra buttons. Not anymore, thanks. Gamepad whenever possible.] So, anything that keeps me alive for longer is very welcome.
4: I can't even get much help on my worlds until 1.2 is out, since it'll simplify hosting a game. I've tried many times to host a game, without luck. Not gonna ask how to, it's just a warning that i can't get help in my stage right now.
With that said, i'll keep digging for gold then to make my armor, i guess. Got 8 hearts or so, and 5 useless stars.
It's my preference to hold off on weapon upgrades until like silver/gold tier and space out weapon upgrades to about 2 tiers apart(may be more or less depending on how much metal I have to work with) and suit up with good armor, and I like to use high-knockback weapons until I get to having demonite equipment so that gives me a high survivability rate: spears/hammers will keep the enemy at range and it'll hurt alot less if one happens to sneak by or backstab you. It's a simple and typically effective strategy and it's pretty much impossible to fail with if you can hide in a cubby hole or something where monsters can only come at you from one direction.
Hammers & axes tend to fit into the "2-tier rule" I have for weapons, but I like to have a good axe because when I need wood, I need alot of it and I don't want to swing for 30 seconds per tree waiting for it to explode into a rain of stick bundles.
I agree. Still, armor increases your margin for error which is very useful for newcomers and clumsy people(like me).
There's a reason why arenas for bosses are mostly made of wooden platforms.
Yeah, it's an effective strategy but also a very slow one. I tend to dislike weapons with really heavy knockback because it makes it more difficult to chase them down and finish them. That's a matter of personal preference, agression vs defensive play, but your way might be better for the OP.
I can understand that. I generally just go for the larger trees to make the most out of the time I spend chopping but that and the fact that it's a good demonite item to use as a weapon which requires only demonite to make is why I generally pick the War Axe of the Night over The Breaker. Sure, that means i'm still using a copper axe until I at least beat the eye but that's fine for me. About half the time i'll end up with spare of one of the ores and make an axe anyway.
True. It's another matter of personal preference in playstyle I suppose. Focusing on armor/knockback weapons provides you with a nice buffer to slightly improve your chances of survival but it also makes it take longer to kill your targets. The OP already has a blue moon and minishark though so I guess the issue of weapons vs armor is really already settled there...
The whole list of crafting stuff almost slapped my face xD
