How do I get cool items?

New to this game. Wondeirng how to get cool stuff like powerful weapons, etc

the best items are avaiable in hardmode, get a guide voodoo doll from a deamon in hell and drop it in the lava. the defeat the boss flesh wall who will spawn. then you are in hardmode. next thing is smashing deamon alatrs with your pwnhammer , dropped by wall of flesh. once the altaars are destroyed new ores spawn and the rest is up to you to figure out.

Just play the game and explore. The advice above is great if you know what you are doing, but if you rush to hardmode, or even to a boss without even knowing what the hell you are doing you are gonna get your ass handed.

This game has a natural progression, and as long as you keep exploring and looking for chests you'll end up getting awesome equipment. No need to do anything fancy really, just explore, kill and loot.

If you want some guidance then I can suggest some early awesome weapons:

Muramasa: Automatic, large, fast sword. It's a precius melee weapon pre-hardmode. You find it in the dungeon, but you have to kill a boss first in order to gain access.

Vilethorn: A magical "sword" that goes thru walls and pierces multiple enemies. Obtained by breaking shadow orbs in the corruption. However, after breaking some orb you spawn a boss.

Musket: Your first gun. Same as above, break some shadow orbs.

Waterbolt: Magic spell that bounces on walls and pierces enemies. Dungeon item.

Harpoon: High damage, spamable, no ammo ranged weapon. Obtainable as a random droop from goblins during a Goblin Invasion.

As you can see most of the cool stuff is obtained after defeating a boss or some kind of dangerous event. No need to get real fancy in this game, just play and eventually you'll find the cool toys.

start mining, start killing monsters, use a hammer to pick up chests after you have looted everything, so you can put chests in your house and keep all the stuff that drops from enemies.
explore natural caves, find heart crystals, make the best gear you can find (copper-iron-silver-gold etc) just to have some resistances vs dmg.
the dungeon (you have to kill skeletron at nigh once you find the dungeon, you will need some ranged weapons and ammo, shurikens and throwing knives are great vs him), and if you can kill him you can explore the dungeon. do it slow and steady, make sure you kill the mage-skeletons that shoot at you through walls quickly.. loot gold keys and open the gold chests, you will find a shadow key after a while, and some cool weapons.
you probably want to make a skybridge, just build blocks quite high, now build horizontal and eventually you will find a floating island (you need golden keys to open the chests, wich you got from the dungeon), if you are lucky you will find a horseshoe and a balloon, if you use a tinkerer you can buy the tinkerers workshop and combine balloon with cloud in a bottle and horseshoe with obsidian skull (wich you get from mining lava that has been cooled off by water - might come in handy when you go to hell)
next stop, find a jungle, kill the tentackle thingys and wasps, and loot those glowing flower thingys down there, after you get alot of those you can make the sword blade of grass, and possibly the throwing chakrum, wich is gonna help you alot..
now you should be more than ready to fight another boss, go to the corruption, destroy shadow orbs (or you can summon him by collecting vile mushrooms and rotting flesh, making it into worm food and summoning down in the corruption), when he spawns he will be no match for your blade of grass (hopefully, you brought potions), you will loot alot of ores and stuff, make that into the pickaxe and armor.. now you are more than ready for HELL!
just dig down from anywhere in the world, you will get to the underworld, where your objective is to open shadow chests (for wich you need the shadow key, that you got from the dungeon hopefully), kill imps and demons, be careful with the voodoo demon, if the voodoo doll he carries drops in lava you summon a boss, wich you dont want just yet.. use a hammer and get a hellforge from hell, mine alot of hellstone, make armor/pickaxe and whatever out of that.. hopefully you got some improvements from the chests you looted. when you feel ready, kill the boss by tossing a voodoo doll in the lava, now you are set for hardmode..
by now you should have a pretty good grip on the whole terraria thing, destroy altars for more ore in the world using the hammer you got from the hellboss (tip, go down from the normal above ground to just before the background mud turns into rock and mud and mine horizontal to find them easy, there should also be alot in the corruption areas), make alot of spelunker potions (gold ore, moonglow (from the jungle at night) and blinkroot and bottled water (glass jar wich you can "craft" when standing in water), use a spelunker potion and all ores light up like crazy to find cobalt, adamantite and mythril, wich you craft into drills (instead of pickaxes) and armor/weapons, once you have everything you want (you need cobalt drill to mine mythril, mythril to get adamantite) you should be ready to take on the hardmode bosses, wich drops souls you need to craft the hallowed gear, wich is the best at this point.. you also need souls of light and night, wich you get from the new hardmode enemies that spawn... best of luck to you.. anything unclear, check terraria wiki or ask :P

The only thing I would add is, before visiting the dungeon or attempting to kill skeletron you should consider going for Eye of Cthuluh first. It's by far the easiest boss of the bunch and should give you enough materials to make a decent sword or bow to get you going.
