One meteorite is probably enough to make a full set of meteor armor, but be careful: The ores themselves hurt you when you step on them.
Light's Bane is pretty much better for fighting, but the War Axe of the Night works for chopping down trees. Generally I would just take the Light's Bane on the basis that I would be out to make the Night's Edge. Realistically, though, the Muramasa (found in the Dungeon) is pretty much the best sword aside from Night's Edge, at least before Hard Mode.
The speed on the flintlock sorta makes up for the difference in damage, but again, what you really want to do is journey down into the dungeon and find the Handgun if you want to use guns. It's quick, deals nice damage, and gets upgraded with some helstone bars. And this is where Meteorite becomes useful; crafting it and musket balls into meteor shot. Very good for taking on the Wall of Flesh to unlock Hard Mode.
