Basically you just need to hit Host & Play and give your friend the IP you see on Google http://www.google.com/?q=What%20is%20my%20ip

I think i couldnt explain, currently we are playing with Host & Play but when the host quits the others are disconnecting as well.
I want to host a server where we can join whenever we want without effecting others.

Ho sorry I see

There is many possibilities, the easier one would be to manually run TerrariaServer.exe from the Terraria folder. Then you connect yourself to 127.0.0.1:7777 and your friends should have the same ip as before. But you will have to be always online, and you won't be able to restart the computer without closing the server.

The best solution but costly is to rent a VPS server, so the server is on its own connexion, hardware

Not sure it exists free because only a large world requires 1 to 2 GB RAM and a bit of cpu

I've got a dedicated server running on my home media server, old turion processor with 8gig ram, runs like a dream and my friends can all remote login and play

You can do it from home as D3Cyph3r did and as class101 is explaining with the terrariaserver.exe file.

If you have the interest to do it from home for you and a few friends only (not some mass server population), then there is no reason you can't do it that way from home.

yeah the cheapest method I think would be to host it on a media/NAS server so it serves your home network aswell as game server if directly plugged in your internet box
