NPCs won't move in, housing suitable?
I've got a fairly decent sized apartment complex at the edge of the world over an ocean, and all the rooms are valid for NPCs to live there (I can make my guide move into any of the apartments). However, no NPCs are appearing at all, no matter how long I'm waiting.

I've had had bombs, a gun, and plenty of money on hand, killed Skeletron already, and rescued the mechanic. So I should be getting people moving in like crazy. Is there some bug with having homes at the edge of the world? Couldn't find any help with Google on the matter.

There are typically two reasons NPC refuse to spawn.

1) You're too close to corruption or crimson.
2) You've got an invasion in progress.

I'm not close to the crimson, but that invasion is a definite possibility. Now that I think about it, I had a message a few hours ago about a goblin invasion from the west. Though I'm at the west edge of the map, and never got any goblins attacking at all. Crap x.x

Invasions always head to the original spawn, the middle of the map. Go there and you should find them having a picnic or something.

Odd choice for your base... Try building a very small room with a chair, table and light source in some other area of the map and see if that one attracts any NPC.

I wandered off east looking for a jungle, and the goblin army finally showed up. After killing them, NPCs started moving in like crazy. Seems the army was just kind of...eating sandwiches and waiting for me. xD

It is a bit of an odd choice for a base location, but the way I look at it, I've only got one side that I have to fight off corruption/crimson/hallowed from. Not to mention my home being above the ocean means quite a nice supply of coral, shark fins, and glow sticks (I've got diving gear ^_^ ). I usually end up setting base up near the middle of the map, and felt like I wanted to give this a try :P

Yeah the goblins like to have picnics or something.

It's a good choice for base location. I keep trying but I can never design a house I'm happy with that fits the ocean theme.

Sadly, mine's not quite ocean themed yet. It's just some wood apartments and stuff all thrown together just for the sake of NPCs being there in my new world. I'm thinking I might add just a hair of water in the bottom of some of the homes, or maybe have water falling down into them. Probably change the homes from just 6x10 boxes into little tugboats or something. I've been awake for about 24 hours, so who knows what I'll come up with xD;

Well, my last little idea turned from a little sandstone hovel into a massive pyramid that took me two whole days to build. You'll think of something. ^^

If you haven't solved the problem yet:

-Make sure there are at least two solid blocks next to each other in the floor (i.e. the floor is not entirely made of platforms)
-Check to see if there are any holes in the wall you missed
-"Natural" (not placed by any player but by worldgen) walls are not valid for housing

Also, next time please check the date on which threads are posted before you comment on them. This thread is 6 years old and the game has received several updates since then, and while OP's oversight can still happen now, it's very possible that content discussed in threads that old has been changed or removed entirely.
