How do you break ropes?

Sorry if this is a waste of people's time, I just want to know how to break ropes, sometimes I place them wrong and such. I want to know what is required to break ropes.

pickaxe probably, don't actually know as i use rope rarely xD. But future tip, use the "auto-select" button-esque option so that when you hover over a tile that can be broken, it will automatically start using the associated tool when you click

Sorry, but I don't actually know what 'auto-select' is. It would be great of you could tell me. All the new 1.2 items confuse me since I usually only play Console and iOS. xD

you can use a pickaxe to break it
that simple little trick right there

I've tried a pickaxe but it doesn't work. Of what I know I'm probably doing something wrong. Thanks by the way!

Under the controls in terraria, there is an option called auto-select,I binded it to my "left shift" key.If im orginally have a sword held. ANd then, holding left shift, i hover over a dirt block" it will automatically switch to my pickaxe/drill and start mining, This works with pretty much anything that can be broken by a tool. You can even keep your pickaxe away from you "hotbar" and use this, i do it and it allows me to put more weapons on my hotbar
