Good Magic Item Pre-Hardmode.

Im going to try to attempt a magic run in terraria and i need to know what a good spell book or item is. (Please dont say water bolt)

I used craftable staffs(staves?), vilethorn, aqua scepter and flower of fire in that order until hardmode on my mage run.

Edit: Vilethorn was by far my favorite weapon until it became obsolete.

I've heard good things about the diamond staff, if you can get that many diamonds.

Pre hardmode you are looking at Flamelash, Demon scythe, Book of Skulls and Flower of Fire for high tier drops and finds.

I used the aqua scepter and sapphire staff in my 1.2 pre-hardmode playthrough. They were awesome, I did manage to swap my sapphire staff for the diamond one after a lot of searching.
The diamond staff with a good refore lasted me a little way into hard mode.

But yeah those two magic items gave me no troubles.

New aqua scepter is just amazing. I got it with -25% reduced mana cost too :D

Vile Thorn is awesome before HardMode. No really it is.

The craftiable staves are pretty darn baller, least till you hit hardmode. I used the emrald stave for most of my pre HM 1.2 play (emralds+tungsten) it only cost 4 mana a blast and hits decently hard. ruby and diamond do more damage but they cost more mana a shot, so up to your preference, though for me it was "whichever one i got the gems for first"

Well actually, Water Bolt seems to have been buffed a little. It's not useless I swear!

I killed Queen Bee 6 times using Mythical Water Bolt. She's a fairly easy boss but seeing as her bee minions give you relatively unlimited mana when you kill em, it was even easier. And now I have the Bee Keeper, Bee Gun and Sweetheart Necklace! (want to get the rest of my Bee Suit now)

If your good, its better than book of skulls in the dungeon sometimes. Both are great bets, and jungle armor (off-topic i know) is easier to make.

Yours may be reglaure but my is mythical(diamon staff).
