If you noticed with the hive items you get when you break the hive, you cannot actually place it.
You have to use the hive wand to do that. Same with some other types of blocks in 1.2, such as living wood blocks - you get "wood" when you break them, that you can then place into living wood with the wood staff.
Also the Bone Wand in the Dungeon similarly works with bones, turning them into placeable blocks...

I would have been happier if they just let me throw full stacks of bones in like some kind of cone of pain or a shotgun blast, as I don't know what else to do with the stuff...

Though I suppose you could make a bone fortress....that might be cool....
I didnt even try to place them...Well,ty!I guess im gonna make myself a Hive base.
place them, and destroy them again, they produce bees or honey, just like the "natural" ones do
The reason why you can't place Hive blocks without the wand, and why the wand is actually really cool:
Hive blocks create Honey when destroyed. Honey is a really cool liquid, as it regenerates you when you dip into it. But, as with any other liquid, you have to move it with a Bucket or Pump, and both methods are pretty annoying when moving huge masses of the stuff.

BUT! By placing Hive blocks with the Hive Wand, and then destroying them again, you are basically creating free honey. Wherever you want.

Oh, and also those mini bees that spawn when breaking Hive Blocks might be useful as well. You could lifesteal off of them, for example.

Ty for the answer!Honey does count as a liquid right? So i could make a little sea of it?And i finally know why i healed so fast against the queen.I bought terraria back in 2012 and didnt really play it much but the 1.2 update made it so much better!

Yes, honey counts as liquid, but, I think the ocean biome is only creatable with Water, not lava or Honey. Still, you can swim in Honey just like you can in Water (if you have the right items, of course). Be careful when mixing Honey ith water or lava, the honey is then turned into solid blocks and can't be turned back! But those blocks are pretty nice as well: They are used for crafting, and anything touching them will be slowed down, like they're sticking to the honey!
I didnt plan on creating a biome like the ocean but just a little bath of honey, like a campfire.

Well you can still make a giant ocean of honey, but it won't count as an ocean biome, so no ocean mobs will spawn.

Didnt think so.But giant bee-sharks would still be awesome:B1:
Funniest thing related to honey so far is that I made a 2 block wide 1 block high bathtube with honey in it and a campfire next to it, calling it "healing spa", for players to regenerate faster after they died and respawned with 100HP. When I went away and came back, there were goldfishes swimming in that 2 block space.

would finally give a use to the five billion bones i got when farming a shadow rod (got it on my fith necro :D)
You know you can either sell extra Necro Helmets or you can make furniture and mechanical skulls with them[terraria.gamepedia.com]...

Hey I did that too!

Incidentally, has anyone tried draining the oceans and replacing them with honey? :D

use this to make the honey items that are used in the boss items, if you are farming for something, like the pet of trophy
