Is there some tricky way to dig through large masses of sand (without it falling down)?
For example I can "dig" through water by extending walls and then draining small portion of water, while much largers masses are being contained behind those walla. But I can't figure out my way through the sand. And simply digging out whole bunch just to make a small tunnel seems excessive.

Pity. I was hoping I could maybe melt the sand or something, leaving glass walls around it, that would prevent the rest of it from falling down. It really screws with my global railroad project...

ye nah I think the genuine only way is finding and digging through sand stone and making tunnels that way

Try using the block replace where you mine the sand with something like stone.

I don't think you can mine with anything but pickaxe.

Block replace doesn't work on sand.

Find the bottom of the sand and go under it. Like, so that you have solid blocks above you. Sand will only fall when there isn't solid blocks.

Or dig to "shallow" it out and then go above.

In the most recent update, it was made possible to blockswap sand blocks. so try that

you can dig until you hit dirt/stone/sandstone, dig a 1x1 block and put a torch in there. Then remove the dirt holding up the pillar of sand and it should all collapse in one neat pile
