for some reason monsters don't press down
Other than that, putting up with it, or constantly barricading with a couple of bricks above your head is the only option.
a. make all the background walls wood or other man made stuff (basically anything but dirt)
b. use rope instead of platforms. it is much easier and faster anyway
c. make some sort of trap at the bottom with yellow pressure plates (depending on how your mine is set up)
d. get some good armor or some more HP, so that the damage you get from them falling on you is not devastating to your health
e. USE SUPAH MAGIKS TO KILLZ THE ZOMBIEZ
Dirt is fine so long as it's placed by the player. Player placed dirt walls function like any wall, and it also looks slightly different.
Oh ok, I didnt know player placed dirt was different. Just haven't placed much dirt of my own i guess! :P Basically the premise is still the same being that you would have to destroy all the walls and make your own for it.
Ugh. Already takes forever to dig a shaft. :/
(and, for the record, the shaft is actually in my housing complex, with no outside access at the top and all side passages get walled off the instant I finish digging out the ores that I spotted there and continue digging down)
