Just make torches, it's a much easier system and in the end it's better to light everything up so you know where you've been, etc.
Also with that helmet taking up an equip slot you're losing out on whatever armor you're wearing's set bonus.
Scratch out the Fairy and the Wisp, even then the Shadow Orb (RIP Orb of Light) is quite crap. I'd rather use torches instead of that poor bastardized item.
Also nobody mentioned Shine Potion.
I still say torches are just fine. You can place them as you go, then you don't need to keep wasting potions or being helpless to attack.
You can also get a flare gun, but flares are basically like glow sticks, they disappear eventually.
Because the OP isn't in hardmode yet and can't get them for now. But I agree with you, mentioning them at least lets him know they exist.
My favourite by far is to make a glowing mushroom and daybloom farm. Then you have a limitless supply of shine potions. :)
I find the Fairy and Wisp to be kinda annoying. They clip themselves into blocks and make it go dark. Shine potion goes out of you, so you're always in brightness. Shame about the duration though.
I'm playing a fresh toon with a friend and
i too thought shadow orb was crap, but that must have fixed it in the 1.2 update, it shines brighter now. it was broken before.
i'm using shadow orb and its just fine, i've gotten used to shift and torches and realized i haven't even thought about my mining helmet.
in 1.2 you can place torches directly on the background wall, it used to be you could only plant them in the blocks and whenever i tried , if your clicking just 1 pixel off, the context turns into the mining pick and breaks the block instead and it was really frustrating
Where you are, the only light sources that aren't held items I know of are your helmet, or the already mentioned potion.

So those are just made out of imagination then i guess :P
As others already mentioned there are serveral options to choose fom.
-Shadow Orb
-Pressing Shift-Key while Cursor hovers over background pulls out a light source you carry
-Wisp/Fairy. The first is great to explore the surroundings as it's a bit controllable.
-Flamelash. Basically a magic attack, but you have full controll over it and it emits a huge amount of light. Sparks of it used to travel through solid tiles. Don't know if they patched that by know though.
-All kind of other Weapons(Spectre Staff a.e.)
-Shine Potions
Best options imo for you would be the Flamelash+one other light source that stick's with you(Shadow Orb, Torches, S.Potions)
yeah your like the freaking 5th person to do that.
i stand corrected, i didn't know there was an icky torch, when the guy said putting them in water i thought they meant the cursed one
